Washing Machine Not Spinning or Draining in Islamabad: Causes, Quick Checks & Repair Cost

A washing machine that fills with water but will not spin or drain usually has one of four problems:

  • A blocked drain pump or drain hose
  • A worn or snapped drive belt
  • A faulty lid or door switch
  • A motor fault

The first thing to check is the drain filter and the drain hose, because a blocked filter is the most common cause and can be cleared without any parts. If the machine drains but the drum will not spin, the belt or the lid switch is more likely, and if it neither spins nor drains and makes no sound at all, the motor or the control board may be at fault. Most of these faults are fixed in a single visit once the cause is identified, and a diagnosis visit tells you the exact fault before any part is ordered.

Washing Machine Not Spinning or Draining in Islamabad: Causes, Quick Checks & Repair Cost

A blocked drain: check this first

A blocked drain is the first thing to check, because it is the cheapest fix and the most common one in Islamabad homes. Small items like coins, buttons, hairpins and sock fragments slip past the drum and collect in the drain pump filter, and hard water scale and lint build up in the same place over time. The drain filter is usually behind a small flap at the bottom front of a front-load machine or at the back of a top-load machine, and it can be unscrewed and rinsed out after placing a towel and a shallow tray underneath, because water will come out when it is opened. Also check the drain hose for a kink or a blockage where it meets the house drain, and make sure the hose is not pushed too far down the drain pipe, because that can cause water to flow back. If the machine drains slowly but still drains, a filter clean and a hose check usually solve it.

The lid switch and door lock

The lid switch and door lock are safety devices that stop the drum from spinning when the lid or door is open, and they fail more often than most owners expect. On a top-load machine, if the lid switch is worn, the machine may fill and agitate but refuse to spin, or it may spin only when you press the lid down firmly. On a front-load machine, a faulty door lock means the machine will not start the spin cycle at all, and some models show a door error on the display. This is a small part and a quick replacement on most Samsung, LG, Haier, Dawlance, Kenwood and Super Asia machines, but it should be fitted correctly, because a badly fitted switch is a safety risk. Never bypass a lid switch or tape it down, because the drum spins fast enough to cause a serious injury.

The drive belt and motor coupling are the parts that transfer power from the motor to the drum, and they wear out with age and heavy use. A worn belt slips, so the drum turns slowly or not at all while the motor runs, and you may hear a squealing or burning rubber smell during the spin cycle. A snapped belt means the drum does not move at all even though the machine fills, drains and sounds normal. On many Haier and Dawlance top-load machines, a worn motor coupling gives the same symptoms, and on front-load machines a worn drum bearing causes a loud rumbling or grinding noise during spin that gets worse over weeks. Belt and coupling replacements are routine repairs, while a worn drum bearing is a bigger job because the drum has to come out, and the technician should quote it before starting.

The control board and motor are the last things to suspect, and they are the most expensive, so they should only be diagnosed after the simple causes are ruled out. If the machine shows no lights, does not respond to any button, or stops at the same point in every cycle, the control board may be at fault, and this is common on machines that have suffered voltage fluctuation, which is a regular problem in parts of Rawalpindi and older Islamabad sectors. If the motor hums but the drum does not move even with a new belt, the motor itself may have failed. A proper diagnosis checks the motor, the board and the wiring in sequence rather than guessing, and a good technician will tell you honestly when a repair costs more than the machine is worth, especially for a very old semi-automatic model.

There are a few quick checks you can safely do before booking a visit. Check that the machine is level and not overloaded, because an unbalanced load stops many machines from spinning as a safety measure, and redistributing the clothes and running the spin again often solves it. Check that the drain hose is not kinked and that the machine is not pushed hard against the wall. Check the filter for blockages as described above. Do not open the back panel or touch any wiring, and do not run the machine repeatedly on spin when it is making a grinding noise, because that can turn a bearing repair into a drum replacement. Note the brand, whether it is a top-load or front-load, automatic or semi-automatic, and what exactly happens when you run a cycle, because that information helps the technician bring the right parts.

What a washing machine repair costs

ServicePrice
Diagnosis visitFrom Rs 800
Drainage and motor repairsRs 1,500–Rs 4,000

We repair Samsung, LG, Haier, Dawlance, Kenwood, Orient, Super Asia, PEL and Waves washing machines across Islamabad and Rawalpindi, both automatic and semi-automatic, and most repairs are completed in a single visit. Every job carries a 15-day workmanship warranty.

Technician’s note: Start with the drain filter — it sits behind a small flap at the bottom front of a front-load machine or at the back of a top-load, and a blocked filter is the most common cause and can be cleared without any parts. Put a towel and a shallow tray underneath before you unscrew it, because water will come out when it is opened.
