The single most common fault is drainage failure — the machine fills and washes normally but water does not pump out at the end of the cycle. On most front-load machines this is either a blocked drain pump filter or a failed drain pump motor. The second most common is spin failure — the machine fills and agitates but does not spin. On top-load machines this is often a lid switch or motor coupling. On front-load machines it may be the door interlock or motor brush issue.
Clean the front-load door seal after every use — water and detergent sitting in the fold of the seal causes mold growth and eventually seal deterioration. Run a hot empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar once a month to remove detergent and mineral buildup from the drum and pump.
Do not overload — this is the fastest way to wear out drum bearings and motor couplings. The load should leave the drum about two-thirds full with space for clothes to move. Use the correct amount of detergent — more is not better. Excess detergent creates foam that the pump struggles to evacuate and can leave residue that causes odor.
